USJETAA is proud to partner with select institutions which offer JETs and alumni a variety of tuition scholarships. These relationships have been built specifically to assist JETs in their next steps—both personally and professionally.

American University School of Education Scholarship

American University

Washington, DC

  • American University has partnered with USJETAA to offer a scholarship to their graduate degree options to JETs and alumni.

    This partnership offers a 29% tuition scholarship to be distributed over the program's duration, and application fees will be waived. This applies to residential and select online programs. Please see the list of programs here.

    JETs and alumni do not have to be US citizens to take advantage of this scholarship opportunity.

  • This university partnership between USJETAA and American University applies to all residential and select online programs. Please see the list of programs here.

  • Complete applications will include the following credentials:

    • a completed application form to the degree program of choice

    • resume

    • statement of purpose

    • a JET Program Certificate of Participation provided by CLAIR (click here)

    • 2 letters of recommendation

    • if a student has attended other institutions, official transcripts are required and may be included in their application packet or sent separately

    *as part of this partnership, the GMAT and / or GRE are not required

  • Through our partnership with GLOBIS University, eligible USJETAA members may be considered for:

    • A merit-based scholarship of up to 50% for their full MBA Programs, subject to admissions screening and the eligibility criteria outlined below

    • An enrollment fee waiver for the Pre-MBA Program only

    Students with remaining financial need are encouraged to apply directly to GLOBIS University for additional funding opportunities. 

    Please note that this scholarship cannot be combined with the GLOBIS scholarship, but there are loan and other scholarship opportunities available

    To be considered for the MBA tuition scholarship, applicants must:

    • Complete at least one Pre-MBA course with a grade of A or B

    • Demonstrate engagement in the GLOBIS community, such as attending a GLOBIS event

    • Be admitted to an MBA program

    This scholarship is merit-based and not automatically granted. All eligibility requirements must be met in addition to standard admissions review.

  • Participants and alumni of the JET Program are eligible to enroll in select master’s programs at Penn GSE.

    Benefits

    • Apply by March 1st to avoid the fee. After March 1st, request a waiver code at admissions@gse.upenn.edu.

    • JET participants or alumni will receive a minimum of $15,000 in scholarships.

    • Applicants may qualify for further merit-based and need-based financial aid.

    Part-time students receive an equivalent percentage of each scholarship throughout the course of their studies at Heinz College.

Middlebury Language School Scholarship

  • JET alumni are eligible for Middlebury Language School’s need-based graduate financial aid and an application fee waiver for the Master of Arts in Japanese Language & Culture and the Master in Teaching (MAT) with Licensure in Japanese.

    Financial aid is awarded in the form of grants, not loads loans. This means that if you qualify, you can attend our graduate programs with up to full funding (100% tuition, on-campus housing, and food).

  • Middlebury Language Schools provides need-based funding for a Master of Arts in Japanese Language & Culture and Master in Teaching (MAT) with Licensure in Japanese in Secondary (7-12) teaching.

    They also continue to offer their 8-week immersion program in Japanese (high school students to 80+ years old from beginner to advanced), but there is no JET-specific scholarship for the language immersion program (only application fee waiver).

  • Please review the graduate program application requirements and instructions.

    Once you have started your application (and before you have submitted it), please email the School of Japanese at japaneseschool@middlebury.edu to receive your application fee waiver.

    Once the waiver has been processed (typically within 24 hours), submit your application with the required transcripts, letters of recommendation, and language assessment.

    When you apply, indicate in the short answer questions that you’re affiliated with JET.

    Upon submitting your application, you will receive a confirmation email which will include a link to our need-based financial aid application. Please complete and submit this application.

  • The fee waivers and scholarships offered by Temple University Japan are available to all current JET participants and alumni. TUJ offers the following partnership programs:

    Graduate College of Education- waives the one-time New Student Fee.

    Master in Management offers a one-time scholarship of 400,000 JPY to be applied toward tuition and fees.

    Continuing Education offers a 15% discount towards the one-time Entrance Fee and a 15% discount on tuition for their coursework.

  • CU Boulder offers full funding for graduate students in its MA program in Japanese language, literature and culture and its PhD program in Japanese literature. These take the form of teaching assistantships, which come with a tuition waver, a generous stipend for living expenses, and health insurance. It especially encourages applications from JET alumni because of their Japanese language ability.

  • The scholarships are not guaranteed for JET alumni. However, CU especially encourages applications from JET alumni because of their Japanese language ability.

Hawaii Pacific University Scholarship

  • Applicants must request an HPU application fee waiver code. Requests must be made prior to submitting the HPU online application.

    AFTER ACCEPTANCE INTO A PROGRAM, applicants will need to complete the required verification of membership form and will be required to resubmit this on an annual basis for the duration of their enrollment. Submission of this form is required preferably no later than 3 weeks prior to the start of your entry semester.

    Discounts are not retroactive and apply to new and continuing students.

Showa Women’s

    All foreign students receive a 30% reduction in tuition.

    JET alumni are offered a special work-study program in which they receive scholarships that fully cover tuition, fees, and housing support in return for part-time work at the university.

  • SIT Graduate Institute has partnered with the USJETAA to provide financial assistance to JET Program alumni interested in pursuing a graduate degree at SIT.

    This partnership highlights the visions and values of both organizations in integrating the power of education as a tool to promote greater understanding across cultures.

Other Scholarships, Fellowships, and Grants

  • The Association for Asian Studies has compiled a list of grants for graduate students in various Asian Studies programs.

  • Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) provides an annual list of Scholarships for International Students in Japan.

  • The Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to Japanese and American undergraduate and graduate students pursuing study abroad programs or international study in either the United States or Japan.

    A generous endowment gift of $10 million from Mr. Toshizo (Tom) Watanabe to the U.S.-Japan Council makes it possible to award scholarships to students for whom international study would not be possible without financial support.

  • The Blakemore Foundation was founded in 1990 by Tom and Frances Blakemore for the purpose of providing fellowships for the advanced study of Asian languages and grants to facilitate the introduction of Asian art to communities in the United States.
