ISO Freelance Writer for USJETAA

USJETAA is seeking a freelancer to write quarterly Senpai Spotlight articles. Senpai Spotlight is a monthly USJETAA publication which showcase and highlight JET alumni who are contributing in innovative ways- both personally and professionally- to the US-Japan relationship.

This person will be part of the USJETAA writing team and as a team member will also help peer-edit other team member Senpai Spotlight articles. Each quarter this person will be expected to interview, write and finalize one article as well as peer-edit a team member’s article. Writing an article includes interviewing, obtaining article-relevant photos and ensuring the subject has reviewed the final draft for comfort as well as any other details needed to bring it to publication.

All articles should be original work, previously unpublished, and range between 1,000 to 1,800 words. These should be written in a conversational tone for a targeted audience of future and current JETs, alumni and stakeholders. Articles will preferably include copyright free visual media which are sourced by the freelance writer either independently or through the interview process from the subject (with written permission for use).

Articles will be branded as USJETAA publications and will be disseminated through our newsletter, social media platforms, website blog posts, and other appropriate distribution channels including JETAA Chapters and AJET.

The fine print:

  • Job Type: Contract (freelance)

  • Location: Remote

  • Compensation: Typically $100/article; to be paid on completion of writing each article and peer-editing on a quarterly basis

  • Rights Purchased: 365-day exclusivity and non-exclusive perpetual rights.

To be considered, please email contact@usjetaa.org with the following by November 10, 2026:

  • Your JET placement & years (JET experience strongly preferred)

  • Two or three previously written articles and/or a link to your website or portfolio. You do not need to be a professional writer, but we do need to see examples of your writing style.

  • A brief explanation of why this project is of interest to you in the body of your email.

  • Please confirm that you have an active, US-based, bank account to receive compensation. USJETAA cannot transfer funds internationally.
