Scholarship Partners

These scholarships, fellowships, and tuition discounts are for JETs and JET alums. These relationships have been built specifically to assist JETs in their next steps—both personally and professionally. Some program benefits require applicants/recipients to be registered, paying members of USJETAA, and most will require coordination with USJETAA & CLAIR to verify your status.

American University School of Education Scholarship

American University—School of Education

  • The American University School of Education has partnered with USJETAA to offer graduate degree options to affiliated participants. The graduate programs are designed for those participants who want to contribute to the greater U.S.-Japan relationship and ‘bring Japan home’ by fostering education and understanding of Japanese culture in the United States.

    This partnership offers a 29% tuition scholarship.

Carnegie Mellon Heinz College Scholarship

  • Heinz College awards qualified JET program alumni a minimum scholarship of $7,000 per semester.

    Possible additional support for qualifying students in master’s degree programs in Information Systems and Management, Public Policy and Management, and Arts & Entertainment Industry Management is available.

    Part-time students receive an equivalent percentage of each scholarship throughout the course of their studies at Heinz College.

Middlebury Language School Scholarship

  • JET alumni are eligible for Middlebury Language School’s need-based graduate financial aid and an application fee waiver for the Master of Arts in Japanese.

    Financial aid is awarded in the form of grants, not loans. This means that if you qualify, you will attend the School of Japanese at a reduced cost.

  • Middlebury Language Schools only provides funding for a Master of Arts in Japanese Language and Culture degree.

  • Please review the graduate program application requirements and instructions.

    Once you have started your application (and before you have submitted it), please email the School of Japanese at japaneseschool@middlebury.edu to receive your application fee waiver.

    Once the waiver has been processed (typically within 24 hours), submit your application with the required transcripts, letters of recommendation, and language assessment.

    When you apply, indicate in the short answer questions that you’re affiliated with JET.

    Upon submitting your application, you will receive a confirmation email which will include a link to our need-based financial aid application. Please complete and submit this application.

University of Colorado Boulder Scholarship

  • CU Boulder offers full funding for graduate students in its MA program in Japanese language, literature and culture and its PhD program in Japanese literature. These take the form of teaching assistantships, which come with a tuition waver, a generous stipend for living expenses, and health insurance. It especially encourages applications from JET alumni because of their Japanese language ability.

  • The scholarship is only applicable towards a MA in Japanese literature and culture or a PhD in Japanese literature.

  • The scholarships are not guaranteed for JET alumni. However, CU especially encourages applications from JET alumni because of their Japanese language ability.

Hawaii Pacific University Scholarship

  • Our partnership with Hawai’i Pacific University includes the following for *USJETAA members*:

    • 40% tuition discount towards all undergraduate programs

    • 30% tuition discount towards a wide array of select graduate degree and certificate programs** (contact USJETAA for the most recent listing of approved programs)

    Please note that the tuition discount may not be used in conjunction with any other HPU institutional scholarship, grant, or other discounted tuition program

  • Applicants must request an HPU application fee waiver code. Requests must be made prior to submitting the HPU online application.

    AFTER ACCEPTANCE INTO A PROGRAM, applicants will need to complete the required verification of membership form and will be required to resubmit this on an annual basis for the duration of their enrollment. Submission of this form is required preferably no later than 3 weeks prior to the start of your entry semester.

    Discounts are not retroactive and apply to new and continuing students.

Showa Women's University Scholarship

  • Please note this is university does have co-ed classes despite its name.

    All foreign students receive a 30% reduction in tuition.

    JET alumni are offered a special work-study program in which they receive scholarships that fully cover tuition, fees, and housing support in return for part-time work at the university.

  • SIT Graduate Institute has partnered with the USJETAA to provide financial assistance to JET Program alumni interested in pursuing a graduate degree at SIT.

    This partnership highlights the visions and values of both organizations in integrating the power of education as a tool to promote greater understanding across cultures.

    • SIT Graduate Institute will commit to providing 30% tuition scholarships for eligible JET alumni.

    Eligibility

    • Applicant must have obtained a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

    • Applicant must be a JET Program alum or a current participant.

    • Applicants must submit a Certificate of Participation issued by the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR), available through CLAIR’s New York office by going to their website (www.jlgc.org), as verification of their participation in the JET Program.

Other Scholarships, Fellowships, and Grants

  • The Association for Asian Studies has compiled a list of grants for graduate students in various Asian Studies programs.

  • Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) provides an annual list of Scholarships for International Students in Japan.

  • The Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to Japanese and American undergraduate and graduate students pursuing study abroad programs or international study in either the United States or Japan.

    A generous endowment gift of $10 million from Mr. Toshizo (Tom) Watanabe to the U.S.-Japan Council makes it possible to award scholarships to students for whom international study would not be possible without financial support.

  • The Blakemore Foundation was founded in 1990 by Tom and Frances Blakemore for the purpose of providing fellowships for the advanced study of Asian languages and grants to facilitate the introduction of Asian art to communities in the United States.
